Chicken Coop Designs – Are They Important?
You might have a good idea as to the interior of the chicken coop you want to build, but have you given much thought to the outside? This can be quite a bit to take on, and the first thing you will want to look at is the roof of the building.
As you are creating the roof, you have to make sure it is placed at an angle so that rain, snow, and other celestial items can easily run off.
However, you do not necessarily need to build a double angled roof. This, of course, is simply because chickens do not require quite as much room as human beings.
One thing to remember though, is that your roof will need to be fairly high as chickens do like to jump.
Access to the chicken coop will be designed in two different ways, the first being your access door. This will be a regular sized door, and it should open into a sort of ‘airlock’.
This will not be an airlock in the conventional sense, but rather a set of doors to ensure your chickens do not wander into the open yard the moment you breach the door.
If any of your chickens were to escape, it would not only be difficult to catch them, it would put them at serious risk to predators.
The second access route of course will be placed on a different wall exiting into the yard. This exit can be composed of virtually anything so long as it involves a ramp. Keep in mind that you can build the ramp out of a mailbox, which will be a great idea if you plan to keep the chickens in the coop during the winter. You will be able to close the mailbox door, and if you want, you can stuff a roll of insulation inside the box while severing access to the inside section via a board (screwed to the wall) or a manufactured door.
On the subject of the yard, you need to make sure it is fenced off in such a way that the chickens cannot escape or poke their heads through.
By doing this you guarantee that your birds can roam safely in a healthy environment.
Building a chicken coop is not the easiest thing in the world, but it is something you can accomplish, and before you know it, you’ll have an outstanding yard for your chickens where you can enjoy watching your feathered friends grow up.
There are plenty of ways to build a chicken coop, but it is important that you follow certain design rules for the exterior. Once you have done this, you’ll have a great coop your chickens as well as you and your family will definitely enjoy.
